Abbotsford, BC – The weekend saw a significant increase in both domestic abuse and impaired driving incidents within the city limits, according to reports from the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). Between Friday evening on June 19th and Monday morning, APD responded to a total of 326 calls.
Impaired drivers were particularly prevalent over the weekend. A total of 16 individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence, marking the highest number caught in a single weekend since the Victoria Day long weekend last month. Notably, one incident involved a truck colliding with a utility pole at the intersection of Huntingdon Road and Clearbrook Road on Saturday morning.
Domestic violence cases also surged, accounting for 12 out of the total calls received by APD over the weekend. The department emphasized that such incidents remain a top priority and continue to be a significant concern within the community. On Sunday, an officer responding to one of these domestic abuse-related calls was reportedly assaulted at the residence, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries while apprehending the male suspect.
"These types of calls remain a priority for us," stated APD in response to inquiries about the recent spike in incidents. The department has not provided additional details regarding specific cases or potential causes behind the rise in these issues over the weekend.
