PORTLAND, Ore.—An arson investigation is underway after four electric delivery vans belonging to Amazon were destroyed by fire early Monday morning at a Rivian dealership and service center located along Southwest 1st Avenue near the I-405 overpass. The incident occurred around 2:30 AM when multiple callers reported flames in trees, which led firefighters to respond quickly.
Upon arrival, Portland Fire and Rescue found significant damage with fire spreading into tree canopies, forcing them to upgrade their response by adding more engines, a squad, two trucks, and two chiefs due to the involvement of at least four vans. The nature of the lithium-ion batteries in these vehicles posed unique challenges for firefighters; they had to employ specialized techniques including piercing battery compartments with an abrasive aggregate mixed with water to control toxic fumes.
According to Portland Fire and Rescue spokesperson Rick Graves, “The cells are difficult to access once ignited through thermal runaway,” making it nearly impossible to extinguish the fire without completely submerging the batteries in water—a measure that was not feasible given the extent of damage. As a result, firefighters focused on containment efforts to prevent further spread.
Amazon’s Public Relations Manager Jesus Garcia stated, “We’re aware of the incident and are cooperating with law enforcement and our partners as they investigate.” There were no reported injuries from this event.
The fire burned for approximately 90 minutes before being contained. The vehicles suffered extensive damage; only aluminum frames remained intact post-fire. Firefighters exposed to smoke had to undergo a cleaning process at their stations due to potential toxins in protective gear, highlighting the hazardous nature of such incidents involving electric vehicle batteries.
