William Lyon, a 21-year-old resident of Cloudberry Close in Derby, was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, affray, and criminal damage. The incident occurred on July 16, 2025, when Lyon fired a shot at a rival during an altercation that had escalated earlier the same day.

According to Derbyshire Police, two groups were involved in fighting near Cowsley Road just before noon but left shortly after their initial confrontation. However, they returned approximately one hour later, leading to Lyon firing a single gunshot towards his rival. The bullet missed its intended target and instead lodged into the engine of a parked car.

Detective Constable Laura McCormack, who led the investigation, emphasized that the incident was "distressing" for local residents and stressed there is no tolerance for such behavior in Derbyshire. She noted it was only by sheer luck that nobody was injured during this volatile situation.

Lyon had been scheduled to stand trial at Derby Crown Court on February 20th but pleaded guilty immediately upon his appearance, avoiding a full trial process. His sentencing reflects the seriousness of carrying and using firearms within public spaces in the region.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about street violence and its potential for serious harm or fatality if not deterred through legal action like this recent conviction.
