CHARLOTTE, ME – A man identified as Robert Boggia Jr., a resident of Whiting known for his extensive criminal record, died in a high-speed crash on Charlotte Road early Saturday morning. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police, Boggia was involved in an incident at a local bar where he allegedly threatened patrons with a firearm before fleeing.
Boggia's vehicle, a red Corvette, was reportedly traveling at speeds exceeding 150 miles per hour on Route 1 when law enforcement attempted to intervene. Despite efforts by the Baileyville Police Department and later a Washington County sheriff’s deputy, Boggia managed to evade capture until he crashed near Charlotte Road.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found Boggia ejected from his vehicle with fatal injuries. The crash site investigation indicates that excessive speed was likely the primary cause of the accident. An ongoing probe by authorities aims to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the incident and a toxicology report is scheduled for analysis.
Boggia’s criminal history includes multiple charges such as gross sexual assault, aggravated trafficking in drugs, possession of firearms by a felon, and various violent offenses including domestic violence assaults and terrorizing. His most recent arrest occurred in 2018 when his home was raided by the Maine State Police tactical team following allegations that he set fire to a woman’s house in Blue Hill.
This tragic incident underscores ongoing concerns about public safety posed by individuals with extensive criminal backgrounds who continue to engage in dangerous behaviors, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies.
