Joshua Emonson, 24, was sentenced today in Victorian County Court after sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. The court handed down a sentence of twelve months imprisonment, followed by 200 hours of community service and fifteen years as a registered sex offender.

The assault occurred on February 20, 2025, when Emonson met the victim at Sunbury train station after communicating with her through social media platforms. He sexually assaulted her in his car for approximately twenty minutes before leaving her alone at the station to return home by public transport from another part of Melbourne.

Judge Kellie Blair acknowledged that sexual assaults on teenagers are common and typically result in significant jail terms, but she noted "exceptional circumstances" surrounding Emonson's case. She concluded that while his actions were serious, they were impulsive rather than predatory, and he had shown remorse since the incident occurred. The judge also highlighted positive character references submitted by individuals who believed Emonson was committed to change.

The sentence drew mixed reactions from those present in court; some expressed anger towards Emonson's family and supporters while others heckled them as they left the building. Despite his crime being unrelated directly to his church, it caused significant division within Encourage Pentecostal Church in Romsey due to concerns over how allegations were handled internally.

Emonson previously worked at a childcare center run by the church where his father, Tim Emonson, served as head pastor. This led some community members and former congregants to question whether there was adequate transparency regarding the situation involving Joshua Emonson prior to sentencing.

While this sentence marks an end for now in legal proceedings against Emonson related to these charges, he still faces other pending criminal allegations which are expected to go to trial at a later date.
