GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Nicholas Hofstra, 38, was arrested and charged with several offenses following a violent road rage incident that occurred on June 17 near East Beltline Avenue and 28th Street in Grand Rapids.
According to court documents obtained by FOX 17, the aggressive encounter began when Hofstra was driving aggressively and cutting off other drivers. A male driver who had been cut off approached Hofstra’s vehicle at a traffic light and smashed his window with his hand before fleeing the scene. In retaliation, Hofstra allegedly retrieved a handgun from inside his car — in violation of Michigan law — and fired multiple shots after the victim drove away.
Surveillance footage captured six bullet impacts on the other driver's vehicle, including hits to the engine compartment and windshield near the steering wheel. After firing the gunshots, Hofstra followed the fleeing driver, parked behind him, and assaulted the man physically once more when he got out of his car again. Witnesses reported that Hofstra continued hitting the victim even after they were unconscious on the ground.
Hofstra was later arrested by police who found shell casings near the scene. He claimed to have retrieved the gun from his trunk during questioning but video evidence contradicted this statement, showing it had been inside the vehicle all along. The victim suffered a chin injury and required hospitalization for treatment.
Nicholas Hofstra is now facing multiple charges including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to cause great bodily harm less than murder, illegal carrying of a concealed weapon, and use of a firearm during a felony. If convicted on these charges, he could face life in prison.
The incident highlights the dangerous escalation that can occur from road rage incidents when firearms are involved. Law enforcement officials urge drivers to avoid confrontations and report aggressive behavior safely rather than engaging directly with suspects.
