A 49-year-old Greenfield woman has been accused of breaking into a car and stealing items associated with an area youth baseball league. Theresa R. Schwedler was arrested on June 22 after being found in the driver's seat of a vehicle at the Greenfield Youth Baseball diamonds.
According to police, when confronted by the owner of the vehicle, Schwedler refused to leave but later claimed she had thought it was her own car and that someone must have left a key for her. She also admitted to going through the console but said she did not take anything from the vehicle.
Schwedler is facing charges of burglary (Level 5 felony), theft (Class A misdemeanor), and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle (Class B misdemeanor). She was released on $5,000 cash bond after an initial appearance in Superior Court 1 last week. Her next court date is set for July 29.
A search of Schwedler's belongings at the county jail revealed three baseball hats and four yellow and red bags containing tournament championship rings that were allegedly stolen from the concession stand at the ballpark. The concession stand had been broken into, with items missing or used, including a half-eaten corn-dog.
**Background**
The incident occurred on June 22 at approximately 3 p.m., when an officer was called to investigate a report of a burglary in progress. Schwedler's vehicle, which she claimed had a broken window, was found parked on the other side of the ballpark. The investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear whether Schwedler's claims about finding a key for her car are true or if she intentionally broke into the vehicle.
The charges against Schwedler carry significant penalties, with burglary being a Level 5 felony that can result in up to six years in prison.
