Chatham County, Ga. — A man was arrested on Monday after a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a bicyclist late Sunday night. Robert Brian Herfurt, 51, is charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, and leaving the scene of an accident/failure to give aid or information.
The crash occurred around 11:06 p.m. on Wilmington Island Road in Chatham County when a motorist struck and killed a bicyclist before fleeing the scene. The Chatham County Police Department requested assistance from Georgia State Patrol (GSP) for the investigation, which later identified Herfurt as both the driver involved in the crash and the person who reported it.
Chatham County deputies located Herfurt at the scene where investigators determined he was under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently arrested and taken to the Chatham County Detention Center.
The road remained closed for several hours while GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team processed evidence from the collision site. The team is now responsible for handling all charges related to this case.
No additional details were provided by authorities regarding the identity of the deceased bicyclist or any other relevant information such as witness statements or specific alcohol levels in Herfurt's system at the time of arrest.
