Late Sunday night, an officer with the Melissa Police Department fatally shot a man who was reportedly armed during a late-night incident near State Highway 121. The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. at a home along East Melissa Road.

According to the department's statement, officers were called to respond to a situation involving another person and encountered the armed individual upon arrival. During the encounter, an officer discharged his weapon in what police described as self-defense or protection of others. The man sustained gunshot wounds but was initially treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.

Despite receiving immediate medical care, the injured man later succumbed to his injuries. No other individuals were harmed during this incident. Both the deceased and the officer involved have not been publicly identified as of now due to ongoing investigations.

The Melissa Police Department has placed the involved officer on administrative leave pending further investigation in line with departmental protocols. The Texas Rangers are handling the criminal aspect of the case, while the Collin County Sheriff's Office processed the crime scene. Additional support was provided by neighboring police departments such as Anna and Princeton.

Melissa Police have stated that they will not release any more information at this time due to the active nature of the investigation into the shooting incident.
