A 51-year-old Mexican man has been arrested by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents as he attempted to cross into the United States from Mexico. Jorge Luis Castro-Mercado faces federal charges related to drug trafficking, stemming from a March indictment.
According to court documents, Castro-Mercado is accused of operating a Continuing Criminal Enterprise, also known as a "kingpin" operation, which involves importing and distributing dangerous drugs into the US from Mexico. The indictment alleges that he was a principal leader in this enterprise, which resulted in numerous charges including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine.
The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury in Tucson on March 11, lists 12 counts against Castro-Mercado. These include possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, as well as importation of these substances. If convicted, he faces mandatory life imprisonment under the "kingpin" statute.
Background: The US government has been cracking down on drug trafficking operations along the Mexico-US border in recent years. This incident is part of ongoing efforts to disrupt and dismantle such organizations.
