On New Year’s Eve 2026, an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot Keith Porter Jr., a 43-year-old resident of Northridge. The incident occurred at the apartment complex where both men lived in Los Angeles County. Nearly six months later, authorities are still investigating the shooting, which has garnered attention due to its timing relative to other fatal encounters involving ICE officers.

Brian Palacios, identified as the officer involved, is currently on administrative duty following a restraining order application by his girlfriend's ex-husband who alleged harassment and threats from Palacios. Despite this, Palacios remains employed with ICE according to court records. His attorney, Stacie Halpern, maintains that the shooting was in self-defense.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initiated an investigation immediately after the incident but has yet to conclude it or present findings to the District Attorney's office as initially expected. Venusse D. Dunn of the L.A. County District Attorney’s office stated on June 20th that further investigative work is needed before a case can be filed.

The shooting did not receive the same level of public outcry and media attention as two other recent fatal encounters involving ICE agents in Minnesota, where Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti were killed while protesting. However, Keith Porter Jr.'s death has sparked local protests and community gatherings to demand transparency from law enforcement agencies involved.

Attorney Jamal Tooson, representing the Porter family, expressed concern over the delay in completing the investigation. He claims there is evidence contradicting federal officials' accounts of an exchange of gunfire at the scene. The family submitted a tort claim on May 11th and awaits the government's response within the next few weeks before pursuing further legal action.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement agencies, community members, and civil rights advocates regarding use-of-force policies and transparency in investigations involving ICE officers.
