A Genesee County couple is facing second-degree murder charges after their 7-year-old son died from an obesity-related heart condition. Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41, are being held without bond at the Genesee County Jail.
According to authorities, Casper Jacob Shane O'Brien weighed 255 pounds at the time of his death on November 4, 2025. The cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease that can be caused by obesity. The boy's height and weight were significantly above the healthy range for someone of his age.
The couple allegedly neglected to provide medical care for their son, who did not have a pediatrician and had only been taken to the doctor once. On the morning Casper died, the parents called a veterinarian to treat their dog instead of seeking help for their child.
This is the latest in a series of cases highlighting concerns about childhood obesity and neglect in Michigan. The couple's 5-year-old daughter also lives with them.
The defendants are scheduled to appear in court on July 2.
