VANDENBERG VILLAGE, Calif. (Santa Ynez Valley News) — On Monday morning, Ashlee Lynn Buzzard appeared before Judge Stephen Dunkle at Santa Maria Superior Court to set a preliminary hearing date for her case involving the death of her 9-year-old daughter, Melodee Buzzard. The court confirmed that the special-set preliminary hearing will take place on September 16.
Buzzard, who remains in custody since being charged with murder following an incident last October, was accompanied by her defense attorney Erica Sutherland during Monday’s brief appearance. During the proceeding, Sutherland informed the judge of plans to file a motion seeking accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and requested that this matter be heard on July 13.
Prosecutor Kimberly Locky did not object to scheduling these hearings as proposed by the defense team. The court proceedings were brief and focused solely on setting dates for upcoming legal actions without delving into specific details of the case or underlying allegations against Buzzard.
The preliminary hearing is a critical stage in criminal procedure where prosecutors must present evidence sufficient to justify moving forward with trial proceedings, adhering strictly to due process requirements under California law. This phase also allows defense attorneys like Erica Sutherland an opportunity to challenge evidentiary bases and potentially negotiate plea agreements or other legal outcomes prior to formal indictment.
The case has garnered significant local attention since Buzzard’s arrest in connection with her daughter's death last year, prompting community concern and ongoing vigilance from law enforcement agencies involved. Further developments will be closely monitored as the court schedules progress toward a full trial date following completion of discovery processes and any related legal motions filed by either side.
