One man was killed and another critically injured in a shooting near downtown San José's North Market and West Santa Clara streets on Sunday night. According to the San José police department, officers responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 9:12 p.m. and found an unconscious man with at least one gunshot wound.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving measures being attempted by responding officers. A second man, also unidentified, was found several yards away with life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive.
Police have described the shooting as an isolated incident and said it is not connected to nearby World Cup festivities, which were taking place in the area but had ended hours earlier. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation by the SJPD Homicide Unit.
This marks San José's 13th homicide of 2026, following a previous shooting on June 8 that left one man dead and a woman critically injured outside a Kaiser Permanente medical complex.
In response to this incident, as well as upcoming World Cup events in the area, police said they will maintain a visible presence at events to ensure fan safety.
