SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose police have recovered part of a half-million-dollar bronze statue stolen from the Vietnamese Heritage Garden over the weekend. The memorial, titled "Thank You America," was created to honor South Vietnamese and American soldiers who fought side by side during the Vietnam War.

The 1,500-pound bronze soldier along with flags and an urn were taken sometime between Friday and Sunday, leaving behind tracks of debris indicating that it had been dragged away. The statue's theft has caused significant distress within the community, as it represents a symbol of gratitude towards the United States for welcoming Vietnamese refugees.

San Jose City Councilmember Bien Doan expressed deep concern over the loss of the monument which took 11 years to build and cost half a million dollars. "It’s about more than just money; this statue is an important part of our history," said Doan, adding that efforts are underway to restore it in time for Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Day.

Police have not yet made any arrests or provided specific details on when the theft occurred beyond confirming its recovery from a homeless encampment known as "The Jungle" near Center and Story Road. Community members hope for swift action to return the statue to its original place, emphasizing its cultural significance.

"The monument is more than just art; it's a testament to those who served," said Tran Vu of San Jose. As police continue their investigation, community leaders are working on plans to fund and rebuild the memorial in time for significant upcoming commemorations.
