An 18-year-old man was indicted on multiple charges related to a mass shooting that occurred at a pre-prom gathering in Brownsville, Tennessee last month. Dequarius Dushun Lax is accused of killing one person and injuring six others.
According to court documents, Lax has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, employment of a firearm with intent to go armed, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment. The shooting occurred on May 8 at Webb F. Banks Passive Park in Brownsville, where seven individuals were shot.
Seventeen-year-old Saturah Hayes was tragically killed during the incident. Her mother, Astacia Hayes, spoke to WREG after Lax's court hearing on Monday, saying "I just miss my baby" and that every day is hard for her since losing her daughter.
Lax was arrested on May 27 after a combined reward of up to $7,500 was offered for information leading to his arrest. The U.S. Marshals Service offered up to $5,000, while the TBI offered a reward of up to $2,500.
No details have been released on what led investigators to Lax or whether he has a prior criminal history. His next court hearing is set for October 26, with a public defender appointed to represent him.
