NEWPORT, Ind. — A Vermillion County court docket links Matthew Allen Sykes's July 18 jail booking to a pending Level 6 felony intimidation case and schedules further proceedings for the fall.
The Indiana Judicial Branch's MyCase index lists State of Indiana v. Matthew Allen Sykes, case 83C01-2607-F6-000061, as filed July 17 in Vermillion County Circuit Court. The single count alleges intimidation by threatening to commit a forcible felony under Indiana Code § 35-45-2-1(a)(1). The docket lists an alleged offense date of July 16.
Vermillion County's public jail roster lists Sykes, 40, as booked July 18 by the Vermillion County Sheriff's Office on an intimidation allegation. The court docket says a warrant was issued after a probable-cause finding on July 17 and served July 18. The exact name, physical description, statute, date and police reference connect the court case to the jail record.
At a July 20 initial hearing, the docket says the court entered a preliminary plea of not guilty, appointed counsel and set bail at $25,000 with no 10% option. The court issued no-contact orders July 22.
The docket lists the case as pending and schedules a pretrial conference for Sept. 23 at 1:30 p.m. and a jury trial for Nov. 17 at 9 a.m. A charge, booking or probable-cause finding is not a conviction. Sykes is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
